Sustainability

At Royal Inn + Suites and Mamattuk, caring for our guests goes hand in hand with caring for Labrador. As an Indigenous-owned boutique hotel and restaurant, we are committed to choices that support the well-being of our people, our communities, and the land we call home.

Sustainability is woven into every part of our operations. We are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint, supporting local suppliers, and creating a healthier, more resilient future for our community.

Through our Makik Sustainability Initiative—named for the Inuttitut word meaning “to rise, to stand up”—we rise to the challenge of protecting our environment while standing strong for the health and wellness of our team and community.

Below are some of the key initiatives that reflect our ongoing commitment to responsible hospitality:

Energy Efficiency & Clean Power

  • Our kitchen is fully electric—completely free of gas—and powered by locally generated hydroelectric green energy.
  • More than 430 light fixtures throughout guest rooms and common areas have been upgraded to energy-efficient LED bulbs.
  • We completed a comprehensive energy assessment to identify and prioritize additional efficiency upgrades across the property.
  • On-site EV fast-charging stations, offered in partnership with NL Hydro, support sustainable travel for guests and the community.

Waste Reduction & Responsible Resource Use

  • A Vivreau water filtration and bottling system has eliminated the use of single-use plastic water bottles in guest rooms and restaurant service.
  • We have transitioned to a full line of environmentally friendly, compostable take-out containers.
  • All cans, bottles, and beverage containers are collected and recycled through the local depot.
  • Our towel-reuse program allows guests to actively reduce the environmental impact of their stay.

Local Partnerships & Sustainable Procurement

  • We work closely with local suppliers to reduce packaging waste and select environmentally responsible products across food, housekeeping, and operational supplies.
  • Mamattuk features a clean-burning bioethanol fireplace, offering warmth and ambiance with a low-emission, environmentally friendly fuel source.

Food Waste, Agriculture & Circular Practices

  • All organic food waste from Mamattuk is collected and processed in our on-site composting facility.
  • The nutrient-rich soil will support our staff-planted vegetable and herb garden, further closing the loop on sustainable food practices.

Team Engagement & Wellness

  • Monthly Team Makik meetings bring employees from across the hotel and restaurant together to collaborate on sustainability, operations, and continuous improvement.
  • We regularly host wellness workshops to support the physical and mental well-being of our team members.

Every choice, big or small, brings us closer to a future where comfort, amazing food and sustainability go hand in hand. When you stay with us or dine with us, you’re not just enjoying Labrador’s premier hotel and restaurant—you’re part of something that helps it thrive.

A Message from Our CEO

“At Royal Inn + Suites and Mamattuk, we believe that true hospitality goes beyond great service—it means caring for our community, our land, and the generations that will follow. Sustainability is not a trend for us; it’s a responsibility and a commitment we take seriously in every part of our business. I am incredibly proud of the work our team has done to move us forward, and we will continue to build on these initiatives with intention, innovation, and respect for the place we call home.”
